Description
Cover of book of tunes, hymns, psalms, odes and anthems compiled by William Walker and published in 1850. The notation is in "shape notes", which was introduced in 1801 in order to facilitate congregational and community singing. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion collected music from "the most eminent authors in the United States" and its target audience included "Christian Churches of every denomination, singing schools and private societies".
